I’ve had the opportunity to hangout on Twitch a considerable amount in 2025, and I am having a blast! The various communities are internet groups that are familiar to me. I recognize the seeds of the 90s internet while I am there.

I am starting to game a bit again. It has been many years. Before now, I would watch gamers on Twitch to get my gaming itch scratched. Now that I am gaming again, my participation is that much more meaningful.

I have had my concerns about the platform. I will say their newer terms of service and guidelines put my mind at ease. Like the internet of the 90s, Twitch relies on its communities to know what is good for them. This does lead to some serious issues that need to be handled. However, like all new things, people can be relied upon to know how to build things that are healthy for them. What they need are the supports to make sure that can happen.

You will own nothing much less than you used to

One positive aspect I see to Twitch is a practical method for the world to continue its interactions in a sustainable manner. Aside from electricity, the day-to-day costs/inputs to participate in Twitch are relatively small. This allows people from all over the world to compete with each other. It creates opportunities for virtual prizes and economies. And, it gives us a place to meet when it is too cold outside to go hiking for more than an hour.

The world is continuing to develop. Humanity needs places to keep doing the things we like to do. We should have affordable homes, clothes, and some luxuries. However, a majority of our impulsive needs can, theoretically, be met with virtual goods. I see Twitch as one potential place for a Green economy to flourish. I’m not saying lets all retreat to our dark rooms and forget about the worlds problems. I’m saying if you do not want to watch sportsball for 800 hours a year, hang out on Twitch instead.
